Revisions - Powers

Replacement Power - Charmspeaking (instead of Money Growing on Trees)

Gansey is known in canon as being good at talking to people. This is part of his habit of keeping his real feelings under a mask of control, and trying to find an angle that will help him communicate with anyone, whether that's politicians, family, peers, mentors or friends. He's not perfect at this - he makes mistakes when talking to Adam and Blue, for example - but he's close to it, and his friends all know him for it. He's also a natural leader, and tends to try and take control of situations (and tell others what to do). There is also the instance of him being able to bring to life the animal bones at the end of Blue Lily, Lily Blue, by commanding them to wake. While his friends were using their abilities at the same time, the animals did not come to life until Gansey commanded it.

For these reasons, I would like to give him the power of Charmspeak: essentially, the ability to sway people into obeying his will. This power would have the following properties and limitations:

  • This will be an active power, meaning that he needs to be deliberately trying to be convincing. It will therefore not be 'on' every time he speaks, but it will sometimes activate when he is arguing or debating with someone, even if he's not deliberately trying to Charmspeak. Learning to control this will take time and practice, and at first, he will struggle with using it when he doesn't mean to;

  • This power will work by adding an additional layer of sonics to Gansey's voice. These sonics will have a hypnotic effect which will erode the will of whoever he's talking to, encouraging them to obey him/believe him/generally accept what he's saying;

  • It will be possible to hear the difference in the tone of his voice while he's using this power. It will sound deeper, as though he's speaking with an echo;

  • This power is based on sonics and aural reception; it is not a psychic power, and Gansey neither has insight to nor control over anyone else's mind. This also means that a psychic shield will not protect from it;

  • He will only be able to convince people to do things that they are physically capable of doing - no matter how much he tries to tell them to grow gills and live underwater, they won't be able to do it;

  • He can however use it for things like convincing someone to tell the truth, convincing them to help him, convincing them that his opinion is right, and so on;

  • He must be able to speak to use this power, and the person he is speaking to must both be able to hear him and understand him in order for it to work;

  • The effectiveness of this power on other people will depend on them: the strength of their will in general, their overall gullibility, and the strength of their feelings on a particular issue, will make them more or less susceptible depending on the character;

  • The effects will gradually wear off when Gansey has finished speaking;

  • For PC characters, whether or not Gansey can affect them and under what circumstances will be governed by way of a permissions post.

I hope this is okay! I am happy to make any amendments to the properties or limitations that you would like. Alternatively, if you are not content with this power, I would be happy to proceed with just his shapeshifting power and leave the other two power slots blank. Thank you for considering!
